About
Ylva Snöfrid, who was born in Umeå in 1974, previously went by the name Ylva Ogland. Her practice is based in painting, and centres on the painting process itself and the life of the artist. At CFHILL, she will be showing an extensive performance piece. A new book will be published as a part of the exhibition. Her most recent solo exhibition in Sweden was at Bonniers Konsthall in 2015 (She in Four Acts).
“From the Eyes of The Painter, a One Month Performance has two parts. In the first part, the viewer is asked to sit down in an antechamber where they can read and browse through PRAXIS 1, a book published for this occasion. This is an invitation into the world of my ideas, touching particularly on these two last years of my process and my life. It also relates to an artwork I made in Athens, The Painter's Studio in the Shadow World, which was about my own transmutation. Through this book, I will be elucidating on The Painter’s Studio in the Shadow World for the very first time. The book is ordered chronologically, and contains 193 drawings as well as photographic documentation, along with a text by Athens-based curator and theorist Marina Fokidis, who I work with and have known since 2009. PRAXIS 1 is intended as a tool to help the viewer slow down and reflect on the space and the oeuvre that the performance itself is founded on. In the second part, the viewer enters the room where I am, to witness the artwork's creation, present, future, past, and imagination. This occurs through a mirroring of painting, and an encounter between the viewer and myself in my role as artist. This is a studio setting, with furniture made for the works and for their purposes: reading, painting, eating, viewing.”

“Who are you and how many of you are there…?
Formerly, the artist’s name was Ylva Ogland. Actually, her first name was Ylva Snöfrid and her last name was Ogland, but she was called Ylva Ogland. Ylva lived in the what seemed to be the real world, while Snöfrid lived behind the mirrors, in the so-called mirror world, (a world which is often described as less than real). Snöfrid has been always there, since Ylva’s childhood, acting as her mirror twin. Later, she became a part of Ylva’s “art” (“art” as per what “artists” do). For many years, Ylva brought Snöfrid into the world through rituals and ceremonies, through objects and publications, through food and elixirs, through painting her again and again and again and again… Until they were finally fused into one.
We welcome Ylva Snöfrid, who is here now.”
