Isak Hall Vädersolstavlorna

A contemporary Starry Night, channelled through a Baueresque aesthetic with a low horizon; shimmering gemstones; the ocean; a night sky; or a desert landscape before a fiery sunset. Isak Hall’s transcendental layer paintings can be associated with many things, but also with nothing in particular. CFHILL is currently showing the largest, most ambitious, and most varied paintings in Hall’s production to date.

“These four new paintings in this exhibition at CFHILL were executed in a larger format than any of my past works. They display more variety than my previous works; they have more layers, and I find that they also possess more depth.” – Isak Hall

The subjects are partially inspired by the celestial phenomenon featured in Vädersolstavlan (“The Sundog Painting”, which is the oldest known depiction of Stockholm), but also by the majestic natural landscapes Hall has been surrounded by while creating the pieces in north Västerbotten.

The unconventional landscape paintings in this new series are reflections on Northern Transcendence, a term Hall used for his exhibition at Bonniers konsthall in 2020. Each layer of the paintings contributes to the bottomless depth and shimmering surfaces that have come to be Hall’s trademarks.
