CFHILL presents Förklara allt – Nu., a presentation of works dedicated to Marie-Louise Ekman’s expansive oeuvre, bringing together paintings from 1968 to the present. Spanning nearly six decades, the exhibition traces her sharp yet absurdist vision through the years and introduces new works shown for the first time.
Since the 1960s, Ekman has created a distinct visual language of colour fields, seemingly naïve figures, and interiors that transform the everyday into stages of absurdity. This retrospective highlights her persistent exploration of themes such as domesticity, gender, and power, revealing an artistic practice that is at once intimate and precise.
Marie-Louise Ekman’s practice has moved seamlessly between painting, film, theatre, and scenography, expanding the role of the artist in Swedish cultural life. Alongside her artistic production, she has also held leading cultural positions as professor and later principal of the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, and as director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre, positions that have allowed her to contribute meaningfully to Sweden’s cultural life.
The exhibition at CFHILL forms part of a joint presentation with Konstakademien, where Ekman simultaneously unveils a solo exhibition of new paintings, installations, and glass sculptures. Together, the two exhibitions offer a rare opportunity to encounter both the breadth of her career and the immediacy of her current practice.
